Taking Care of Centipedes

Centipedes are very easy to identify as insects due to the numerous amount of legs they possess. The centipede comes in colors ranging from dark brown to light yellow. The average centipede grows to be about an inch in length and has a powerful set of jaws which they use to inflict painful bits on their prey. While the centipede isn’t very dangerous on its own, their presence can suggest problems within your home that will need to be looked into.

While centipedes do not pose a real danger to your house or the people within it these disgusting creatures are often signs that moisture is invading your home. Moisture in the home is a large problem as it can result in the appearance of dangerous molds, and can also attract the attention of termites and other less desirable insects that do cause a real danger to your house.

Indoors Steps

The first step in addressing your centipede problem is to remove any possible moisture issues from your home. The centipede thrives in this type of environment so it is crucial that we remove this in order to create an unlivable condition for the centipedes. The easiest method to do this is to use a dehumidifier in your house anywhere that you notice a buildup of moisture. Other methods that you can use include running a fan inside the home to improve overall ventilation, and repairing any cracks or small seams in the interior of your foundation to limit access to your home.

Outdoor Steps

Taking some outdoor steps is crucial if you want to suppress your centipede infestation for good. The first thing you need to do is clear away any type of debris that is located around the sides of your house. Items like stacks of wood, bricks, rocks, or leaves create an ideal breeding ground for centipedes. The last step that you can try is using a residual insecticide around the foundation of your home and the interior along the bottom of the wall where it joins the floor. Taking this step will greatly reduce your chances of ever seeing another centipede again.
