Disposing of Termites Before They Ruin Your Home

Termites lives deep within the ground and as such they and the damage that they could be causing will go unnoticed until a significant amount of damage has already been done.  There are some ways that you can do to determine if you have a termite problem and need to begin treatment.  Things that you need to look for around your home are wood debris and around the exterior of your home for termites and trails they may have created into your home.

How to Identify a Termite
Termites are small insects that have a body span of about one half inch in length with white bodies and depending on the species they may also be equipped with wings like a flying ant. There are two major types of termites which include subterranean and dry wood termites.  You can properly identify a termite if you see something that looks like cooked rice walking around near or inside of your home.

Finding an Infestation
Termites can be very hard to locate due to the fact that they live underground but if you look for them in the hot summer months you may be able to see them when they come up out of the ground to create a new colony.  When inspecting your home for termite damage you should look around the base of the wall where it meets the floor.  Since you may not yet be able to see any potential damage it’s also a good idea to knock against the wood by the base of the wall and listen for hollow sounds.  Termites also leave very tiny droppings that are red or light brown in color which can be spotted if you look closely enough.

Termite Treatments
There are many different things a person can do to treat their home and property if the suspect they have a minor termite problem.  Using baiting traps is usually a quick and cost effective method for removing the pesky termites from your home.  However you will usually need to use a chemical soil treatment as well around the foundation of your home to ensure that you have gotten rid of all the termites.  If all of your attempts at destroying the termites fail than you may want to look into getting professional help.  Most of the termite removal companies will use a house tent and a powerful chemical to ensure the destruction of the termites.  However if you are uncomfortable with this process you may request that the company use a heating process which kills the termites without the use of chemicals.

Preventing Termite Damage
Taking steps to prevent termite problems before you have an infestation can save you thousands of dollars as these pesky little creatures can quickly reduce walls to shells and cause massive amounts of structural damage.  Termites live in moist places so it is crucial that you repair any leaks around your home and removing laying water from around your property.  Investing in foundation insect screens that cover the vents that are located in your foundations is an inexpensive way to make it much more difficult for termites to penetrate your home.

When you are performing any type of project that uses chemicals you should ensure that you follow all of the instructions on packaging and wear amble safety equipment.
