Growing Herbs Indoors

If you want to plant some herbs but do not have a lot of space outside your home you can have an herb garden inside your home. Herb gardens that are indoors do not require a lot of maintenance and they can give you some natural plants inside your home, as well as giving off nice aromas and can be used to flavor many food recipes.

The first thing you should do is go to your local greenhouse or even the gardening section at your local grocery or discount store. The choices you make at these establishments will have an affect on the type pf herb garden you have inside your home. The easiest way to start an herb garden is by purchasing seedlings that are healthy. Many people make the choice to start their herb garden from scratch by buying seeds. If you decide to do this make sure the seeds you buy are quality seeds and that the seed packets have not passed their expiration date. It is a good idea to buy extra seeds, as it can be the case where only a small amount of the seeds that you plant will flourish. Some of the better herbs that can grow well indoors are mint, lavender, rosemary, basil, and oregano.

You also have the option to buy new pots for gardening but it is not mandatory. Herbs that grow indoors can also flourish in many types of containers that you can find in your home and in the garage. When choosing a container to grow your herbs the most important thing is to choose containers that will have the proper drainage.

Another important part in growing indoor herbs is using the right soil. You can use a mixture of potting soil and sand and then put a little bit of lime in the soil in order to give the herbs the best conditions for them to grow. To help with the drainage of the container you should place a small layer of gravel in the container.

You have to place your herbs in a place where they will have the best chance to flourish. Most herbs need to have a decent amount of sunlight to grow. Therefore it is a good idea to place the herbs near a window or a skylight. The best sunlight will come from windows that are facing the south. Conversely, north facing windows will not give the herbs as much sunlight. If the herbs are not looking healthy and you believe they are not receiving adequate sunlight you can also use fluorescent lighting. During the spring and the summer, or any time the weather is warm, you can put the herbs outside to give them a little help.

Obviously the herbs in your home will have to be watered. With the right amount of water your herbs will flourish. But if you over-water your herbs it can be harmful to the health of the herbs. Generally you can water your herbs once a week making sure not to put too much water in the container. If the water is overflowing out of the container you are probably watering it too much. You need to watch the moisture level of the soil as it will be a good indication of how often you need to water your herbs. Water the herbs just enough so the soil stays moist. If you water the herbs too much it can deprive them of oxygen. If the leaves become yellow on the herbs it can be a sign that you are watering them too much.
